Welcome to the website of Global Act Against Torture and Injustice, Inc. GAATI. GAATI was founded in 2016 as a result of the diabolical treatment its founder, Varmuyan Dulleh, experienced back in African at the hands of the former Liberia dictator President Charles Taylor. Mr. Dulleh and many who share his vision about preventing torture have committed themselves to helping torture victims around the world overcome their horrible experiences and embark upon a new life.
Our mission is to promote and advance human rights by confronting, rejecting, exposing and preventing acts of torture all around the world.
The world we inhabit today is engulfed with enormous obstacles and challenges that inhibit human freedom, stifled the aspiration and happiness of vulnerable, poor and down trodden people in different parts of the world.
One such obstacles or abuses is torture. Let us first briefly digest the meaning of torture before delineating it pernicious effects on humanity and other living things as well.
Torture has got multiple, meaningful definitions. According to the United Nations Torture Convention of 1984 torture is “Any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity.”
This definition could not be clearer but we at GAATI also expand the meaning of torture to include animals.
Factors such as poverty, dictatorship, illiteracy, war and hate give rise to torture. In societies where some or all of the above factors exist, people are vulnerable and left at the mercy of their abusers. Their human dignity becomes compromised and self esteem evaporated.
As we embark upon this noble initiative, it is our hope that well meaning and kindhearted people will lend us their support.
We will endeavor to tackle those factors that encourage torture while at the same time giving helping hands to those impacted by it (torture) through the implementation of specific programs and projects.
